SUMMARY:Making Plans for the Next Step: Things to Do as You Explore & Plan What’s Next For You
DESCRIPTION:Are you loving what you do professionally\, but wonder why you’re not advancing as quickly as you wish? Does it feel as though you might be in a career rut? Are you asking “What’s next and how do I make the ‘big step’ to get there?” Or is it that you’re not even sure how to find that ‘big step’? All too often we continue on “as is” in our work environment\, wanting more\, or seeking change\, but not sure how to move in that direction. \nJoin Leah Gowron (ALT ’90-91) for an engaging look at how a yearly check-in can make ALL the difference as you plan the next stages in your professional development. With more than 25 years of career development\, leadership training\, and a commitment to supporting fellow JETS as they progress professionally\, this session will offer some ways to stop\, reflect\, ask questions\, and create -hopefully (!)- manageable “next steps.” This session is for everyone\, whether you’re just returning from JET or you’ve been back and working 5\, 10\, 15 years or more. \nRegister now to join live\, receive a copy of the recording\, or both!

SUMMARY:JETAA Kyara-ben Contest
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited for our second JETAA Kyara-ben Contest\, a collaboration between JETAA Portland\, JETAA BC and JETAA PNW! Join us on July 11th at 11:00 AM (PDT) via Zoom for a fun afternoon of friendly competition and getting to know people from all over the Pacific Northwest and beyond. \nThis year’s theme is Regions of Japan\, and the second most important criteria for your bento (after your character of course) is to create your design around the theme. You should choose one region or prefecture of Japan\, and highlight something special from that region in your bento. You can choose anything that represents the region\, such as mascots\, scenery\, landmarks\, regional foods\, agricultural products\, etc\, and incorporate it into your bento through either your character\, ingredients\, or design. Be prepared to describe how your interpretation relates to the theme in your paragraph description to the judges in the submission form. \nFor more information please visit: https://jetaabc.ca/20210611-kyara-ben-contest/

Confused on how to define your JET experience if you’re not working in higher education/teaching? \nConcerned that your resume really doesn’t say ALL that it could\, or that it doesn’t offer the reader a strong understanding of your skills and expertise? Have you pondered how a functional or chrono-functional resume might “sell you” more to readers? \nIf the answer is yes to any or all of the above questions\, we have the career development session for you! Join Leah Gowron\, career coach and JET alumna (Saitama ’90-’91) as she offers thoughts and suggestions on how best to market your JET experiences. With more than 25 years of career training\, focusing on a range of professions\, and having participated in the AfterJET Conference in Tokyo since 2001\, Leah will offer solid examples\, easy hints and some potentially new ways to express your knowledge\, skills and abilities on your resume. We’ll cover ways to translate what you did on JET to non-teaching audiences\, look at different resume formats and discuss why some may work better than others\, and think about ways to best market YOU to future employers. It really can be fun and easy\, with a bit of advance time and prep. \nYou can register to join us for the live session\, receive a copy of the recording\, or both! You also have the chance to submit your resume to have the JET portion reviewed (anonymously\, of course) by Leah during the session. \nContact Loretta with questions at career@jetaabc.ca or request the Zoom link here

SUMMARY:JETAABC Yomi-Kai
DESCRIPTION:JETAABC Yomi-Kai Feb 2021: What are we reading this time? \nWe will start the year with a classic short story by Tanizaki Junichiro’s debut work\, “The Tattooer.” This is Tanizaki’s very first published short story and really sets the tone of his future writing styles and themes. Tanizaki is one of Japan’s famous modern writers. His writing often challenged aesthetics and sexuality in an era where Japan was being introduced to “western” ideas. \nWe will meet on Tuesday\, February 23\, 2021 from 7pm over Zoom. Registrants will receive a Zoom link through a Google calendar invite 3 days prior the scheduled meeting. So don’t forget to sign up!

SUMMARY:JETAABC Yomi-Kai
DESCRIPTION:JETAABC Yomi-Kai was created for JET Alumni\, JETAA Friends and Community members to gather to discuss and discover books by Japanese Authors in translation or Japanese Canadian authors. We will always begin each session with quick icebreakers before we get into our book discussions. Our Yomi-Kai will be exploring each reading based on this one question: \nDoes the book engage you? Why or why not?  \nFrom exploring characters\, plots\, point of views\, to the general theme of the work; these are just some of the angles we will talk about with each reading piece. \nBooks are decided based on a voting system by attendees from the previous meeting. Please send in all your recommendations to us and also provide information as to how all our participants can get access to the book. Registrants will be provided a link in their inbox at least 3 days prior. \nSign up here. Follow more updates about this event on Facebook\, Instagram\, or on our JETAABC Newsletters. If you have any questions\, reach out on our Facebook event page or email us here. \nOur next meeting is: Thursday\, December 17\, 7pm \n\n\nWe enjoyed discussing Sayaka Murata’s short story last month so much that we decided to choose another short story by her for this month. We will read her most recent short story\, “Faith“\n\nHappy Reading!
