On Saturday, May 13, 2023, in honour of May Asian Heritage Month, JETAABC Yomi-Kai invited emerging writer: Erica H Isomura. The hour begun with a reading of a poem that speaks to relationships with language, environment, history, and Erica’s yon-sei (fourth generation) 四世 Japanese / diasporic Cantonese identity. This year’s event will be held at Mount Pleasant Community Centre, Multipurpose Room 2, on 1 Kingsway in Vancouver (with the option to attend via Zoom), on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, 6:00 – 9:00pm. Here’s a look back at our Sunday, October 16th Imoni-Kai. This is our annual outdoor tradition where we cook and enjoy traditional taro root stew from Yamagata which is enjoyed all over the Tohoku region of Japan. JETAABC is excited to invite high school students learning Japanese to participate in the Metro Vancouver Japan Bowl. The Japan Bowl® is a Japanese language and culture competition for high school students who are studying Japanese. The Japan-America Society of Washington DC organized and hosted the first Japan Bowl in 1992. What a perfect sunny Sunday to gather for our JETAABC Sports Day!

On August 28th, we had a blast with all sorts of activities, including the classic Rajio Taiso Daiichi, tug of war, wrestling, relays and human wheelbarrow races. There were a mix of participants including JET alumni, their families, and friends from the wider Japanese-Canadian community. Thanks again to the organizers and everyone who came out!
